Ipod Touch Version
Simple, and would be so popular!
I'd love it. Not sure how much work it would take, but I think it'd be a home run if you could do it.

Been thinking about this, but wouldn’t it be a bit of a pain to type in the answers on a iphone/touch?

Optimize for mobile devices (Android, etc)
Optimize the screen for mobile devices like the Android OS (T-mobile G1 phone, etc), iPhone, Blackberry, etc. Could provide a different URL or just detect the device and use the appropriate CSS file.

Add ability to export a vocab list of your "problem words"
Shortened: Add a way to export problem words/grids for use in other programs

This is a feature that we plan on rolling out in the future, but we’re not exactly sure when it’s going to roll out. We have some big plans for the site coming up, so we’ll keep it on our list.

Add furigana to the example sentences!
Sometimes there are Kanji in the example sentences that I can't read and having small furigana above the kanji would really help... otherwise they're just not worth reading!

Code has been started on this, we just have to work on the CSS to make it not mess up the text and transcribe the sentences so it has all the necessary furigana information. It’s currently in the form in that the furigana will show when you mouse over the kanji.

Kanken Version
How about instead of organizing the kanjis in the JLPT levels, have a version that goes in the order for the Kanken that the Japanese people take? I think it would definitely add merit if this were to become a study tool for Japanese people as well.
And I'm sure there are LOTS of materials already available like the various Kanken books, and also from the Kanken DS games. They have a lot of the idioms and stuff too. Would probably make studying more fun as well.

I’m currently halfway through a yojijukugo deck, and next up are kanken decks. The kanken decks however, will take some time, as the amount of words to study is massive, and there also need to be appropriate sentences to match. It’s gonna happen though!

View kanji stroke order
It would help to be able to click something and be able to view the stroke order of the kanji used in the word. For anyone who is going to be writing Japanese a lot, it's one of the most useful things possible.

This will be coming soon, we’ve bought a license to use the kanji stroke diagrams from kanjicafe.com, so they’ll be up there soon!

Add ability to import own vocabulary list
Essentially create an API of sorts. Give a structure for an XML file that can be imported into the system and used as the study list. This would be separate from the ratings but use the same code that would determine if when a word should be displayed again based on how well you know that word.

Update:
I’ll share with you our current plan (although keep in mind, things may change, and they often do as we’ve learned):
At the moment, we’re building our subscription system, which is nearing completion. After that, and some bug fixes, we’re planning on putting in a new interface for the quiz, as well as a small API so Read The Kanji can then be built on other platforms (mobile, etc) in parallel (which we can fund since we’ll have the revenue).
Then, we’re planning on adding in this feature, although I can say that I do not think it will take the form of people being able to share lists between each other. Seems unusual since things are so social now, but there are already many other learning sites that can do this, and we’d rather focus on having strong, quality, proofread decks.
It does make sense however to have… more

Log in with a Google ID (account), Yahoo ID (account) or OpenID . Like: http://smart.fm/ :-) .
It would be so useful not to have so many different accounts!!
Just use your eMail account to log in.
smart.fm (formerly iKnow!) also has such a feature.

Prepair for the new 5 level JLPT divisions
Starting 2010 (the next test) and beyond the JLPT will have 5 levels of tests instead of 4 with some significant changes to the divisions. It's good idea to begin planning for it since any of the people using the site for the JLPT will be taking those tests in the future.
Otherwise, great page thanks so much!83 votesunder review ·

I actually can’t seem to find any official list for the JLPT5. If anyone wants to point one out to me though, I’d be happy to make it

add the feature to completely reset your stats
My stats are a lie, since I havent been studying for a while and lost most of the knowledge and I would like to start over without registering a new account. Is it possible?

I plan to add a small “reset all stats” button to the page eventually, but I would suggest in the meantime to just use the application as is. The application doesn’t write off any words completely, so they will all come back up for review eventually. As they do and you get them incorrect because you have forgotten them, the algorithm should naturally lower their strengths and put them up for review more often. So the program will over time adapt back to your current level.

thanks
The program is so great, I can't believe it's free. It's easy to understand, really detailed and informative, and actually fun to use. Thank you so much!

add the ability to be tested only with words that use kanji "x"
It would be great if one could choose a kanji that is difficult (maybe from the kanji grid stats page) and then be tested only with words that contain that specified kanji. That way, one could learn the various readings of a single character or group of characters.
By the way, this website is super awesome ;)

flagging kanji from higher levels
Joe: I've read your comments on the 'use only kanji appropriate to the level tested' issue, and agree with what you say about displaying ぎん行 as being unhelpful. However, I do think it would be useful to flag up when a kanji is from a higher level in some way. Maybe furigana just on that portion of the compound would be best, or failing that a superscript number or something, so you'd see 銀<superscript3>行 if testing at level 4 only. Adding the level info to the popup window would also help, but flagging it on the test page would be… more

Create a meaning/kana -> kanji quiz option.
The display/hide options within the program are currently excellent, and with the recent addition of kanji on/off, this program almost runs the whole gamut of a JLPT study routine: Kanji to Kana, English to Kana, Japanese Sentences, English Sentences. The only missing piece is a system in which the user must pull the kanji itself from memory when prompted with the meaning or kana. Of course, a system such as this would be ideally performed in a setting where users must actually write the kanji by hand--and some users with tablet PCs or mobile devices would be able to make… more

The current quiz we have is just one quiz so far. We have others planned similar to what you just mentioned. For example, as they do on the 1kyuu test, a quiz where you are given a sentence with a highlighted hiragana word asking you to choose the appropriate kanji for that word. We’re really just waiting to get the quiz structure and algorithm set enough that we don’t have to worry about it anymore and can start building other quizzes on top of it.

Add in Radicals as a new category
This would be fantastic! There will ALWAYS be new kanji and if we knew our radicals, it would be much easier to figure out the meaning of a kanji that we have never seen before. It also allows us to see the beauty in the etymology of how kanji are created.

Add similar kanji db and mnemonics for problem words
It would be nice to have a database of similar kanji (eg. 玉、王) and submittable mnemonics that users could vote on in order to help keep them straight.
I find that just seeing similar kanji side-by-side helps me tremendously, and if I didn't have to track them all down by hand it would be very helpful.

Add small kanji
The big kanji is useful at first, but the same kanji in a smaller font size can sometimes look quite different.
Although the kanji are presented in smaller font sizes in the Japanese sentences, it is a bit too easy to memorize the sentence context rather than the kanji.
Would it be possible to add small kanji as an option to be tested on?45 votes
